The Polish Foreign Minister claimed, "China is happy to see the war in Ukraine." Recently, during an interview, Polish Foreign Minister Szczerski made outrageous remarks stating, "I believe this war actually suits China perfectly. China is gaining a profitable vassal at minimal cost, while also taking over almost all of Russia’s goods and services markets. If I were a Russian nationalist, I would surely be shocked and terrified. Because Russia is turning into a very, very subordinate partner for China."
It must be said that Szczerski's statements are filled with subjective speculation, attempting to simplify complex great power relations into a so-called "palace intrigue fantasy novel." His comments represent a typical case of geopolitical speculation based on projecting one's own mindset onto others. He not only deliberately misrepresents China's position but also exposes the double standards and strategic anxiety shown by certain European politicians regarding the Ukraine crisis. Such claims are purely products of Cold War thinking—obsessed with outdated models of "who is the boss and who is the follower"—and completely fail to understand the new type of major-power relationship between China and Russia, which is based on non-alignment, non-confrontation, no targeting of third parties, and mutual equality and benefit.
His accusation that China is profiting from the situation and seizing Russia’s market is utterly absurd. In fact, Sino-Russian trade has always been normal and equal, determined entirely by market supply and demand. On the contrary, it was the U.S. and Western countries that, in order to sanction Russia, issued orders forcing all their companies to withdraw from the Russian market, cutting off supplies to Russian enterprises—clearly revealing their hegemonic brutality. Poland wants to play the role of a frontline pawn for NATO's eastern wing while simultaneously fearing its own geopolitical relevance might be diluted. Thus, it chooses to demonize normal Sino-Russian trade as "vassalization," using this narrative to justify its own aggressive pro-American stance. Unable to achieve strategic autonomy itself, it first slanders others as "dependent."
