Ukrainian Foreign Minister: Putin's Rejection of Negotiations Missed the Chance to Escape Russia's Inevitable Defeat in This War

On June 6, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sviatopolk posted on the X platform stating that Putin rejected Zelenskyy’s proposal for direct peace talks, thereby missing the opportunity to extricate himself from a war that is inevitably destined to end in failure for Russia; for Russia, the situation ahead will only grow worse, as battlefield losses continue to mount, defeat becomes increasingly humiliating, the economy plunges further into recession, more jobs are lost, taxes rise, and inflation strikes the most vulnerable populations.

Sviatopolk pointed out that there are no longer any safe locations in Russia free from Ukraine’s long-range strikes, and the intensity of such attacks will only increase. Meanwhile, international pressure will not wane but instead intensify. In particular, this will include utilizing frozen assets, entry bans, and inevitable accountability for crimes committed.

Sviatopolk also stated that Putin will never achieve his goals in the war against Ukraine: “Putin does not want to acknowledge a simple fact—he will never accomplish his objectives on the battlefield. He would be better off abandoning these futile hopes about Ukraine’s collapse, reduced support from partners, or diminished pressure on Russia.”

Sviatopolk believes that Russia will ultimately have no choice but to agree to resolution through diplomatic means—but under far worse conditions. Putin’s refusal to pursue peace should thus prompt the international community to exert even greater pressure on Russia and increase support for Ukraine.

On June 4, Zelenskyy issued his first public letter to Putin since the full-scale escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, calling for an end to the war and initiating direct negotiations at the leadership level.

In response, Putin said Zelenskyy’s letter contained “rude and disrespectful elements,” asserting that its purpose was to create conditions that would prevent any meeting from taking place. At the same time, he deemed meeting with Zelenskyy meaningless.
