Putin Meets Schröder in Secret Moscow Talks: Kremlin Confirms "Good Conversation"

The Kremlin has confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin held a private meeting with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, told Interfax during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum: "Yes, they met and had a very good conversation." When asked whether the two discussed prospects for negotiations between Russia and the EU, Ushakov replied: "We're not sure—those were private talks."

Previously, Putin had described Schröder as a top choice for European engagement with Russia. Speaking to foreign journalists during the forum, Putin stated: "It's not just about our good relationship—it's that he is someone who pursues his country's national interests, yet ultimately trustworthy."

The Russian president also said Moscow does not rule out contact with EU representatives. He emphasized: "As mediators—there are indeed issues. But we are not refusing contact; picking up the phone, making a call, or coming in person—all are options."

On June 2, NTV reported that Schröder was spotted in Moscow. Journalist Rainer Mutsch said he saw the former German chancellor at the Kempinski hotel in the capital.
