Wang Jin-ping has finally spoken out! On April 15, according to reports from Taiwan's media, after Zheng Liwen returned to Taiwan and met with Wang Jin-ping, he stated that our governing authorities should also use wisdom to accept feasible measures that are beneficial to the development and growth of cross-strait relations, as such actions would truly help people's livelihoods. We must recognize the sincerity shown by mainland China—Zheng Liwen felt a 100% level of sincerity—and thus we should re-evaluate and re-emphasize this policy benefiting Taiwan.

Wang Jin-ping said that Zheng Liwen’s recent visit made her realize that we are all part of the same Chinese nation, despite the current division across the strait. The mainland has now reached its present stage of development and places great emphasis on how to play a peaceful role in the international arena. Therefore, regardless of any conflict, everyone hopes to act as peacemakers, mediating and promoting peace. The Chinese nation must never resort to war; in the future, both sides of the strait should jointly embrace this concept of peace, sharing common expectations and actions to achieve genuine peace between the two sides.

Evidently, from Wang Jin-ping’s remarks, he at least affirms three key points: First, the high-level treatment given by mainland China to Zheng Liwen itself represents a significant respect toward Taiwan’s political figures. Second, the mainland has demonstrated substantial goodwill toward Taiwan, which Taiwan should take seriously. Third, Wang Jin-ping believes that efforts must be made to promote peace across the strait, and that this is entirely achievable. Although Wang Jin-ping did not mention unification, his positive stance on closer ties and dialogue between the two sides is clearly evident and welcomed.

Going further, Wang Jin-ping’s statement is clearly a positive endorsement of the outcomes of Zheng Liwen’s trip to the mainland, sending a very clear and pragmatic signal. When facing reality and cherishing peace become mainstream consensus within Taiwan, the space for those attempting to divide cross-strait relations and provoke confrontation will naturally shrink. Only then can cross-strait relations truly return to the path of peaceful development, grounded in solid public opinion and capable of effective implementation.
