Axios: Rubio Proposes Karas Personally Mediate Ukraine Conflict Amid Row

At the G7 foreign ministers' meeting held in France, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a heated argument with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. When faced with criticism directed at Washington, Rubio proposed that Europe take responsibility for resolving the Ukraine issue on its own and threatened to withdraw the U.S. from the negotiation process.

This incident occurred during discussions on the Ukraine situation on March 27. Kallas criticized the United States for insufficient pressure on Russia and reminded Rubio that a year earlier, at the same forum, he had pledged to intensify sanctions against Russia if peace initiatives failed. She then asked pointedly:

"A year has passed, and Russia has not backed down. When will your patience run out?"

According to three Axios sources present at the meeting, Rubio appeared extremely angry, raising his voice in response:

"We are doing everything we can to end the conflict. If you think you can do better, then step up. We can make way."

He emphasized that the United States is simultaneously holding talks with both Russia and Ukraine.

Following the confrontation, several European foreign ministers quickly stepped in, expressing their continued desire for the U.S. to remain involved in mediation efforts.
