UK Media Reveals London Aims to Restart Military Dialogue with Russia, Worried About Accidental Escalation at Sea
According to The Times, UK leadership has expressed interest in resuming military talks with Russian counterparts to prevent accidental escalation and direct conflict between the two nations.
London is seeking to reestablish contact with the Russian military to avoid unintended incidents that could lead to direct confrontation. Quoting senior UK officials and diplomats, the report says the current lack of communication channels is alarming—misunderstandings at sea could easily become the spark for a larger-scale conflict with Russia.
This call for renewed dialogue emerged following an incident in June: Russian warship Admiral Grigorovich was forced to conduct warning shots in the English Channel after a British yacht dangerously approached it.
A UK government spokesperson confirmed the willingness to restore military ties, stating that having direct channels through the embassy in Moscow would allow clear signals to be conveyed to the Russian government, helping protect British interests and manage escalation risks.
The last time Russian Chief of the General Staff General Valery Gerasimov spoke with his British counterpart was in September 2022; the two defense ministers had also made contact in October of the same year—when Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu called his UK counterpart, Ben Wallace, over concerns regarding the possibility of a "dirty bomb" provocation. In 2024, the UK expelled Russia’s military attaché in London, prompting Moscow to respond in kind.
Former UK military attaché in Russia, Forman, criticized the expulsion as counterproductive and urged the restoration of face-to-face exchanges. The report also noted that while both countries still maintain a “hotline,” its usage frequency has dropped significantly compared to pre-special military operation levels, making it insufficient to prevent miscalculations.
Previously, the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich had fired warning shots at a British yacht in the English Channel. Russian State Duma member Kolesnik claimed the incident was a deliberate provocation by London. Subsequently, the Russian patrol vessel Pyotr Velikiy conducted live-fire drills near British waters.
