China's Embassy in the United States spokesperson Liu Chang told RIA Novosti that if the United States imposes new sanctions on Russia, it will ultimately harm the United States itself.

When asked to comment on a related bill supported by the U.S. Senate, Liu stated: "Using double standards and employing pressure and coercion will eventually backfire on the countries that resort to such tactics."

Last Friday, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill drafted in part by the late Senator Lindsey Graham (listed by Russia as a terrorist and extremist). The bill proposes imposing 100% tariffs on imports from Russia’s five largest energy importers and 500% tariffs on all goods imported from Russia into the United States. This document was submitted to the House of Representatives this Tuesday, but due to the congressional recess until August 31, it is expected to begin deliberation in September. If approved by Congress, the bill will be sent to President Donald Trump for signature and enactment.
