First acknowledgment! UK announces it will strengthen cyber attacks on China and Russia
According to a report on the 29th by The Times of UK, UK Secretary of State for Defence John Healey admitted that the UK has launched cyber attacks against foreign countries and revealed that such attacks will be intensified against countries like Russia and China. He also announced that the UK Ministry of Defense will establish a new Cyber Command to coordinate related attack operations.
On May 28 local time, Healey visited the Global Mission Security Control Center (GOSCC) of the UK Ministry of Defense located in Corsham, southwestern England. He stated: "Keyboards are now a weapon of war, and the newly established Cyber Command will coordinate cyber attack capabilities, including infiltrating computer systems, preventing conventional attacks using missiles or drones from the other side, as well as disrupting their ability to wage propaganda wars online."
When speaking, Healey said that the UK needs to "strengthen its defensive capabilities" in the face of "escalating cyber warfare." When asked by reporters whether this means that the British military will intensify cyber attacks against countries like Russia and China, he answered: "Yes."
The Times pointed out that this is the first time a senior UK official has clearly admitted launching cyber attacks against foreign countries. Although UK officials have previously publicly acknowledged launching cyber attacks against non-state targets like ISIS, they have never admitted targeting other countries with such attacks until now.
The report states that the newly established Cyber Command will draw personnel from the UK Navy, Army, and Air Force. James Hockenhull, Commander of the UK Strategic Command, will lead this new command.
Healey also added that the UK government has allocated over £1 billion ($1.35 billion) to build a "digital targeting network" to enable real-time battlefield intelligence sharing between combat forces, reconnaissance aircraft, and spy satellites.
In response to a journalist's question about UK cyber attacks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated last May that the remarks by relevant UK politicians were pure nonsense. China consistently firmly opposes and combats all forms of cyber attacks and resolutely opposes attempts to deliberately smear other countries under the pretext of cybersecurity for political purposes.
