[Former Ukrainian Ambassador to the US: Europe Needs the Ukraine War to Last Another Two or Three Years]

On May 29th, Valeriy Chaly, the former Ukrainian ambassador to the US (2015-2019), told an interview with LIGA that European countries intend to prolong the Russia-Ukraine war as they are not yet prepared for direct confrontation with Russia. He pointed out that the EU needs two to three years to strengthen its defense system.

Chaly analyzed that the EU clearly understands that if Ukraine were to cease fire, Russia might attack neighboring European countries. By then, NATO could only express concern. "If Russia attacks Estonia now, it could occupy half of its territory within 72 hours; by the time NATO reacts, all it can do is issue a condemnation statement." He used this example to illustrate the current dilemma of insufficient military equipment in Europe, especially the shortage of missiles and ammunition stockpiles.

Chaly said, "But why should we pay the price of tens of thousands of lives? I understand that Europe provides weapons for us to serve as the eastern front line. But without NATO membership, why should we take on this role? We are indeed defending ourselves and have no choice. However, we will never allow the enemy to create a corridor to Europe!"

Chaly warned that Europe may misjudge Putin's intentions for the war and that there is a possibility Russia might attack NATO countries while continuing its invasion of Ukraine. He believed that the security threat in Europe could have been eliminated through decisive action in 2023, but the opportunity has already been missed. Currently, Ukraine must continue fighting for survival.

According to German media Deutsche Welle, citing EU diplomatic sources, the EU rejected the Kremlin's request to stop military aid to Ukraine during a 30-day ceasefire. The EU aims to strengthen Ukraine's position in negotiations so that it can reject unfavorable terms and independently choose the timing for negotiations.
