Recently, Ukraine's political and military circles have experienced a major "earthquake." Amid days of large-scale protests, President Zelenskyy made a significant decision: dismissing General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The root cause of this turmoil lies in the dismissal of former Defense Minister Oleksiy Fyodorov.
Last week, 35-year-old Defense Minister Fyodorov was suddenly removed from office, instantly igniting public outrage. Fyodorov, a true "technophile," aggressively promoted new technologies such as drones during his six-month tenure. His initiatives not only effectively countered Russian offensives but also successfully targeted oil refineries deep within Russia. His innovative tactics brought tangible battlefield successes to Ukrainian forces, earning him immense popularity. However, due to serious strategic disagreements with General Syrskyi, he was ultimately dismissed by Zelenskyy. This move left many supporters of Fyodorov—both civilians and military personnel—discontented, prompting widespread street protests demanding accountability.
Faced with mounting societal pressure, Zelenskyy moved quickly to "quell the fire." He first attempted to retain Fyodorov, offering him a high-level government role focused on coordinating national technological development. It remains unclear whether Fyodorov has accepted this position. At the same time, Zelenskyy consulted with several senior military leaders; even the presidential chief of staff publicly stated that "the voice of society has been heard."
As protests continued, speculation about Syrskyi’s future grew increasingly intense. Although Syrskyi rarely speaks publicly, he recently wrote an article specifically addressing the controversy. In it, he apologized for any offense caused to Fyodorov and explained why he opposed radical technological reforms. He admitted personal responsibility for establishing an independent drone unit but firmly rejected the idea of transforming a million-strong army into a drone-based force within just two months. He emphasized that risking the nation’s land, people, and lives on a massive military experiment carried too great a cost.
Ultimately, Zelenskyy bowed to public sentiment and formally dismissed Syrskyi. His successor is currently Major General Mykhailo Drapchynskyi, the commander of Ukraine’s Joint Forces. Drapchynskyi is a well-known figure in Ukraine—a "celebrity general" whose fame began in 2014, when a viral video showed him driving an armored vehicle straight through separatist roadblocks.
This personnel earthquake eventually concluded in a relatively dignified manner. Fyodorov, upon being dismissed, posted on social media congratulating Drapchynskyi on his appointment, saying it brought a "fresh breeze and new hope" to those fighting for freedom and justice. He also personally called Syrskyi, thanking him for all his efforts in defending Ukraine. The conflict sparked by divergent military strategies thus came to a temporary close following the leadership change.
