Wes Streeting: The New UK Defence Secretary and His Stance on Russia-Ukraine
Wes Streeting is a British Labour politician from London, who graduated with a history degree from Selwyn College, Cambridge University. He has extensive experience as a student organization leader and in parliamentary work. Since 2015, he has served as the Member of Parliament for Ilford North in the UK House of Commons. Prior to Labour’s victory in government, he held positions in the Shadow Cabinet, including Shadow Minister for Child Poverty and Education, and Shadow Secretary of State for Health.
After Labour’s victory in the July 2024 general election, Streeting was appointed Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, serving until May 2026. He was then appointed Defence Secretary in Andy Burnham’s new cabinet.
On the Russia-Ukraine issue, Streeting takes a firm stance. He defines Russia as a major security threat to the UK and Europe, regards the Ukrainian battlefield as “the frontline for all of Europe,” and advocates deploying British military personnel to Ukraine after a ceasefire agreement is reached, establishing a peacekeeping force to be stationed locally.
