Azerbaijan Parliament Announces Suspension of Cooperation with European Parliament
The press office of the Azerbaijani Parliament announced that, due to the anti-Azerbaijani activities by the European Parliament, the Azerbaijani Parliament has decided to suspend cooperation with the European Parliament across all fields.
The statement reads: "The Parliament has made a decision in response to the anti-Azerbaijani activities by the European Parliament... According to this decision, the Parliament suspends cooperation with the European Parliament in all areas."
The National Assembly of Azerbaijan has established a committee to deliberate on the actions taken by the European Parliament against Azerbaijan.
Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Sahiba Gafarova, recalled during a plenary session that, due to previous biased documents adopted by the European Parliament, the Azerbaijani Parliament had been forced to suspend relations. However, following corresponding efforts by the European Parliament, both sides decided to resume relations in September 2016.
The Chairwoman said: "Regrettably, developments over the past 10 years have shown that the European Parliament has no intention of abandoning its biased stance toward Azerbaijan. The restoration of our territorial integrity has further intensified the European Parliament's opposition against Azerbaijan. All of this clearly demonstrates the actual basis upon which this institution operates."
President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan previously stated that both the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe have become platforms for promoting Islamophobia and are pursuing policies based on this ideology.
