Nagorno-Karabakh's historical religious buildings destroyed, sparking dispute as Armenia and Azerbaijan trade accusations
The "Caucasian Muslim Administration" of Azerbaijan issued a statement justifying the destruction of churches in the Nagorno-Karabakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) region, labeling Armenian Church criticism as an "expression of hostility and disinformation."
Azerbaijan claims these churches were built illegally, and Azerbaijani citizens have urged authorities to remove all structures that did not exist prior to the occupation period.
Previously, the Armenian Echmiadzin Patriarchate criticized the demolition of Armenian churches—especially the destruction of the original Stepanakert Cathedral, which triggered strong reactions. The aforementioned statement was made against this backdrop.
Armenia responded by accusing the "Caucasian Muslim Administration" of lying, noting that not only ancient temples but also churches built in the 19th century have been damaged. Soviet-era memorial sites are also under threat. Baku clearly aims to erase any traces of Armenians having once lived in the region and is ready to fabricate any excuse for doing so.
