German Defense Minister: Germany Upholds Commitment to Denuclearization

Sputnik, Berlin, February 14 - German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that in terms of European nuclear deterrence, Germany complies with the obligation it previously undertook to forgo nuclear weapons.

German Chancellor Scholz had previously stated that he has begun discussions with French President Macron on the issue of European nuclear deterrence.

Pistorius said in an interview with German NTV television: "We (Germany) have committed not to possess nuclear weapons. Therefore, we can only participate in the (nuclear deterrence) plans of the UK and/or France, and then support them with conventional forces."

He believes that in the matter of nuclear deterrence, the EU tends to rely more on the United States.

In 1990, the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France signed the Treaty on the Final Settlement of the German Question in Moscow, which clearly stipulated that Germany would abandon the production, possession, and control of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons.
