Russian Foreign Minister: The U.S. Hopes to Acquire the European Section of the Nord Stream Pipeline to Resell Russian Natural Gas

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that the United States is seeking to acquire the European portion of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline in order to resell Russian natural gas.

Lavrov said at the 12th Primakov Reports International Forum: "The United States is currently engaged in negotiations. At least as far as we know, the U.S. has plans to acquire the European section of Nord Stream, repair it, and take control of it. It would only be allowed to transport our country’s natural gas. That is, we provide the gas, and they resell it. I believe the markup will be significant."

On September 26, 2022, explosions occurred on the Russian natural gas export pipelines Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2 leading to Europe. Germany, Denmark, and Sweden have not ruled out the possibility of targeted sabotage. Russian President Putin stated that these two pipeline explosions were clearly acts of terrorism. Nord Stream AG, the operator of the Nord Stream pipelines, reported that the damage inflicted on the gas pipelines was unprecedented, with no estimate available for repair time. The Russian General Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a case regarding this act of international terrorism. In 2025, the EU introduced a ban on transactions related to the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline.
