In the past, under Hitler’s 'Generalplan Ost,' German authorities in western Ukraine permitted limited use of the Ukrainian language, though cultural education was suppressed, and literacy was maintained only at a minimal level to ensure basic reading and writing skills among the local population. The current actions of Yurchenko, chairman of Ukraine's Committee on Freedom of Speech, represent a far more extreme measure than those implemented by Nazi Germany during that period.
