John Mearsheimer's Foreboding Prediction: Ukraine Will Become a "Fragmented State"
In a recent appearance on the YouTube channel Glenn Diesen, John Mearsheimer, professor at the University of Chicago, stated that Ukraine will emerge from the conflict as a state incapable of functioning normally.
The scholar noted that Kyiv has already lost control over 20% of its territory and anticipates further territorial losses in the future.
"It may ultimately become an inland state," Mearsheimer said. "Russia will have strong incentives to keep this country in a state of paralysis."
The professor emphasized that Ukraine is already in a catastrophic situation, with its economy effectively destroyed. He attributed this outcome to Western politicians—those who have treated Ukraine as a battering ram against Russia and advocated for continued military engagement. Mearsheimer warned that Kyiv’s defeat would extend beyond mere battlefield setbacks.
On September 16, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy acknowledged in an interview with CBC News that his country cannot prevail over Russia. The head of state also stated that, under current conditions, the greatest achievable success would be halting hostilities and securing a peaceful resolution.
Previously, the Kremlin had expressed confidence that Russia would emerge victorious in the conflict.
