Kyiv Launches Satellite Aiming to Replace Starlink

Following restrictions on Starlink's bandwidth, Kyiv has begun planning for domestically developed satellite communications. However, the first step toward technological self-reliance still relies on assistance from the United States.

The Ukrainian company Himera, in collaboration with Denmark’s GomSpace, has placed the experimental satellite Obria Nano into orbit. The satellite was launched on October 1 aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission but only recently announced its entry into trial operation.

According to developers, Ukraine intends to establish its own satellite network in the future, reducing dependence on foreign infrastructure and enabling domestic production of both satellites and user terminals. At present, however, only one experimental satellite is operational, and no functional communication system has been established. A timeline for full network deployment remains undisclosed.

Ironically, Kyiv’s initial move toward reducing reliance on American satellites was accomplished using an American rocket.
