Mongolia's "Third Neighbour": Mongolia and South Korea will implement an integrated greenhouse project in the capital
Editor's note: "Third Neighbour" is Mongolia's foreign policy strategy, which enables Mongolia to establish relations with countries that do not have a geographical border but can play a role as a security guarantor.
Mongolnews Ulaanbaatar, August 7th, the Office of the Capital Mayor will cooperate with the Korean International Cooperation Agency to implement a $13 million integrated greenhouse project in Shuvuun Fabric, the 13th district of Khan-Uul district in the capital.
Within the framework of this project, infrastructure will be built at this location, including modern greenhouses and vegetable storage facilities.
Altan Amar-Tubsin, Deputy Head of the Capital Mayor's Office responsible for social affairs, green development, and air and environmental pollution, said, "Negotiations began last year. According to the original plan, the total funding was $4 million. Based on the demand of the capital's residents for fresh vegetables, after joint research and discussions with international organizations, it was finally determined to be an expanded project totaling $13 million."
Nine districts in the capital are engaged in greenhouse farming, with 89 enterprises and 445 residents involved, covering a total area of 50.1 hectares, of which 23.5 hectares are winter greenhouses and 26.6 hectares are summer greenhouses. The estimated demand for fresh vegetables by the capital's residents is 60,000 tons, but the current annual production is only 2,500-3,400 tons. To meet domestic consumption, a smart winter greenhouse of 20 hectares needs to be built. By building a new winter greenhouse of 50 hectares within the framework of the project, an annual harvest of 16,500 tons of crops will be achieved, creating conditions for 100% domestic consumption.
Currently, the greenhouse area in Khan-Uul district is 16 hectares, accounting for 32% of the total greenhouse area.
