The general overseeing military aid to Ukraine will assume the top command of Germany’s armed forces
From February 2027, Lieutenant General Florian Frohling will succeed General Böhmer as Chief of Staff of the Bundeswehr—the highest military position in Germany’s armed forces. Prior to this appointment, Frohling led Germany’s special staff for Ukrainian affairs within the Federal Ministry of Defense, focusing on the coordination of military assistance to Ukraine.
The decision was confirmed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who stated that Frohling has studied technological developments arising from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and has applied those insights to advance Germany’s defense capabilities.
During his tenure as Inspector of the Army, Frohling established Germany’s first dedicated drone regiment.
Frohling is a graduate of the Army Reconnaissance Corps and holds a degree in political science. His military career includes service as company commander, battalion commander, and brigade commander, with deployments in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and participation in joint training programs with the British and German general staffs. He has served in various planning and staff roles at the Ministry of Defense and served as personal aide to the Defense Minister from 2017 to 2019.
