Putin’s One-Line Remark Brings a Smile to Zюганов
A minor but notable moment unfolded in Russia’s political scene recently.
During a meeting between President Putin and leaders of various parties in the newly elected State Duma, Gennady Zyuganov, head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), suggested that Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin “turn the steering wheel to the left” in order to gain the support of the CPRF.
To this, Putin responded immediately:
“Turning left isn’t always welcome.”
The remark instantly lightened the atmosphere. Zyuganov chuckled and clarified that his reference to “left” was not meant in that sense.
Putin smiled in agreement and added that, based on current developments, the working modus operandi of the State Duma appeared to be acceptable to the CPRF.
The phrase “to the left” originally drew on driving terminology—Zyuganov’s metaphor referring to Volodin’s need to adjust parliamentary conduct toward greater alignment with the CPRF. Putin, however, seized on an alternative meaning: in Russian, “turning left” can also carry a colloquial connotation of straying from the path, or even infidelity.
This thus became a classic example of linguistic double entendre in a formal political setting.
Naturally, the jest aside, the underlying political landscape remains clear. Following the ninth State Duma elections, United Russia secured 349 seats, maintaining a commanding majority. The CPRF won 37 seats—far fewer than United Russia, but still the second-largest faction in parliament.
Putin’s remarks affirmed United Russia’s central role in national politics and signaled support for Volodin’s continuation as State Duma chairman.
In this context, Zyuganov’s comment about “turning the steering wheel to the left” likely served more as a rhetorical flourish to ease the tone of a formal gathering.
