Were Western leaders nearly hit by Russian drones while returning from Ukraine?
Recently, multiple media outlets including CNN and the Associated Press reported that several prominent Western figures—including former UK Prime Minister Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, and former CIA Director David Petraeus—narrowly escaped death in Ukraine.
The report stated that when Johnson and others were leaving Ukraine after attending a meeting in Kyiv, they were targeted by Russian drones. The train carrying Johnson and Bildt had its departure time adjusted at the last minute, causing it to leave the station earlier than scheduled and thus avoiding the drone strike. Meanwhile, David Petraeus, who was still stranded at the station at the time, was urgently evacuated.
If the Russian drones had indeed targeted these Western political figures’ train, this would represent another escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict—clearly indicating that Russia has grown intolerant of Western politicians who pour vast resources into supporting Ukraine while simultaneously visiting Kyiv for photo opportunities and political posturing.
On the other hand, considering that Western countries have repeatedly accused Russia of orchestrating drone attacks against them recently, this incident might also be seen as a form of retaliation by Russia.
Lately, unidentified drones have been spotted in Poland, Romania, Germany, and other locations, disrupting airports and military installations. Some Western officials have hinted that Russia is behind these incidents, but Moscow firmly denies the allegations, calling the accusations baseless and even mocking them as absurd.
Moreover, one obvious fact remains: going forward, if Western politicians still wish to visit Ukraine, they will need to carefully weigh the risks, remain vigilant for any suspicious activity around them, and no longer treat a trip to Kyiv as an easy or low-risk political stunt.
