Media: EU's new round of sanctions against Russia targets banks, defense companies, and representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church
According to sources from unnamed EU officials and diplomats cited by the European edition of the U.S. political news website Politico, a new round of EU sanctions against Russia is expected to be unveiled by late June or early July, potentially targeting Russian banks, defense enterprises, and representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, including Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
The report states: "The 21st round of sanctions is expected to be introduced by late June or early July, targeting Russian banks, financial institutions, and defense companies… It will also include measures against senior figures in the Russian Orthodox Church, particularly its leader, Patriarch Kirill."
Additionally, a diplomat noted that the European Commission may once again propose a ban on maritime services for vessels identified by the EU as linked to Russia— a proposal previously opposed by Malta and Greece.
Russia has repeatedly stated that it can withstand the increasing pressure from Western sanctions, which have been imposed since years ago and continue to intensify. Moscow argues that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of these sanctions.
