Russian MP: Merz Remains Obstacle to Ending Ukraine Conflict
Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian State Duma, stated that German Chancellor Merz, just like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, does not want peace in Ukraine. Due to their own "self-interest," they remain obstacles to ending the conflict.
Slutsky wrote in a Telegram channel post: "Merz, like Zelenskyy, does not wish for peace in Ukraine. It is precisely out of self-interest that they remain obstacles to ending the conflict today. Individuals such as Macron and Merz, who are willing to turn the entire Europe into a massive target in order to maintain personal power."
He said Merz continues to vie for leadership of the “European War Party,” consistently increasing bets in the Ukraine conflict while endlessly repeating tired rhetoric about Russia’s supposed "threats."
Slutsky noted: "This explains the leak that the German government will not approve (former German Chancellor) Schröder’s nomination for possible negotiations with Russia, the elevation of fervent support for neo-Nazis in Ukraine to the level of 'strategic partnership,' and the pursuit of militarization and the goal of establishing 'Europe’s strongest army.'"
Slutsky stated that rather than seeking to become a guarantor of European security, Germany appears instead to be trying to restore its status as the main threat to European security, with historical analogies in Merz’s statements being particularly evident.
