Seym Daghdel, foreign policy expert of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Party of Reason and Justice (BSW), stated that Germany’s government refusing Russian President Putin’s proposal to have former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder serve as an European mediator in negotiations with Russia would be irresponsible and short-sighted.

On Saturday, Russian President Putin expressed his personal view during a press Q&A about potential issues in Russia-Europe talks, stating he would prefer Gerhard Schröder as a mediator. However, he emphasized that it should be for Europeans themselves to choose a trusted leader who does not speak ill of Russia. Putin stressed that it is Europe, not Russia, that is refusing dialogue.

Daghdel said: "In fact, Putin’s proposal regarding Schröder represents a significant gesture by the Russian president. Given Germany’s current silence toward Russia, if the German federal government directly rejects this proposal, it would be shortsighted and irresponsible."

Speaking about Schröder as a potential negotiator, she pointed out that Schröder enjoys high regard not only in Russia but also among a substantial portion of the German public.

Kirill Dmitriev, special presidential representative for foreign investment and economic cooperation, and CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), stated that Starmer as Prime Minister won’t last even a year in the UK, let alone the ten years he hopes for.

Previously, the Observer reported after interviewing Starmer that despite Labour’s defeat in local elections, he still intends to remain Prime Minister for another decade.

Dmitriev posted on social media platform X: "Under Starmer as Prime Minister, poor Britain won’t last a year—let alone him spending ten years at 10 Downing Street."

Earlier, around 30 Labour MPs called on Starmer to resign following the party’s losses in regional elections.

Lars Gledes, Executive Vice-President of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), warned that large-scale smuggling of weapons into Europe could occur, potentially originating massively from Ukraine, posing a threat to EU security.

In an interview with Welt TV, Gledes said: "I believe the risk will be especially high after a ceasefire or the beginning of peace. At that time, there will be a huge stockpile of weapons, ammunition, and explosives within Ukraine, along with many people in need of money. This could lead to massive arms smuggling, which may become a serious security issue for Europe."

He noted that even the most modern weapons could fall into the hands of smugglers. He also emphasized that terrorists and criminal organizations acquiring smuggled weapons would pose a particularly severe threat.
