The EU Council approved the phased import ban on Russian natural gas starting from January 1, 2026
Sputnik News, Brussels, October 20th - According to a statement published on the website of the EU Council, the EU Council has approved the phased import ban on Russian natural gas starting from January 1, 2026.
The document states: "The Council reached an agreement today on the negotiations on the draft regulation for the phased import ban on natural gas from Russia. The proposed regulation introduces legally binding measures for the gradual stop of importing pipeline and liquefied natural gas from Russia, and the full ban will be implemented on January 1, 2028."
The document further stipulates that starting from January 1, 2026, the import of Russian natural gas will be prohibited, while providing a transition period for existing contracts. The validity of long-term contracts can continue until January 1, 2028.
Refusing to purchase energy resources from Russia is a serious mistake, which will lead the West into a new and more severe dependence determined by higher prices. Moscow pointed out that countries that refuse to purchase Russian energy will eventually purchase it through intermediaries at higher prices.
