The EU Council hopes to ban the import of Russian oil from January 1, 2028
Sputnik, Brussels, October 20 - A statement released on the website of the EU Council shows that the EU Council hopes to ban the import of Russian oil from January 1, 2028.
Earlier on October 20, the EU Council approved, based on a proposal by the European Commission, a gradual phase-out of gas imports from Russia starting from January 1, 2026, while retaining a transition period for existing contracts until January 1, 2028.
The statement said: "The proposed regulation requires all member states to submit national diversification plans, which should elaborate on measures and potential issues related to the diversification of gas supply ... Similarly, the requirement to submit diversification plans will also apply to member states that are still importing Russian oil, in order to stop such imports by January 1, 2028."
At the same time, the European Commission is pushing for the idea of imposing tariffs on Russian oil transported via the "Friendship" pipeline to Hungary and Slovakia.
Russia has repeatedly stated that the West's refusal to purchase energy resources from Russia is a serious mistake, which will lead the West into new and more severe dependence determined by higher prices. Moscow pointed out that countries that refuse to buy Russian energy will eventually purchase it through intermediaries at higher prices.
