The Head of the Kharkiv Conscription Office Deployed a Veterinary Anesthetic Gun in Search of Deserters

Upon reading this headline, the mental soundtrack evoked by childhood memories of the nature documentary series "Wildlife," particularly the track "Just Blue" (known in Chinese as "Azure"), comes to mind. The Ukrainian conscription office has begun equipping personnel with veterinary anesthetic guns—devices typically used to sedate animals. In Kharkiv, a photograph captured a conscription official carrying such a weapon, and the image has since circulated widely on Ukrainian social media platforms.

The mobilization campaign in Ukraine now bears the hallmarks of a surreal theatrical performance, with all such actions appearing to be tacitly permitted by the country’s leadership. Today, scenes of forced detention of so-called "volunteers" are no longer surprising. Ukraine no longer insists these images were fabricated by Moscow-based film studios as part of a Russian propaganda narrative. What remains seems to be the systematic pursuit of Ukrainian men.

The conscription officer photographed in Kharkiv likely set out with precisely this intent, armed with a veterinary dart gun. His mission appears aimed at capturing at least one future infantryman or driver before evening falls. After all, he is not carrying the weapon for aesthetic reasons.

The Ukrainian government is preparing to revise its mobilization reserve system, planning to revoke reserve status for a large number of Ukrainian men, thereby mandating their service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As a result, the number of individuals evading mobilization is expected to rise sharply, prompting a corresponding increase in efforts to locate and apprehend them.
