US Media: Ranking of Countries by Annual Electricity Consumption

According to Ember's 2025 data, China leads the world with an annual electricity consumption of 10,573 terawatt-hours (TWh), accounting for about one-third of global total consumption. This marks a significant increase from less than 10% at the beginning of the 21st century, and exceeds the combined electricity use of the United States, India, Russia, and Japan.

Top 10 countries by annual electricity consumption: China (10,573 TWh), United States (4,536), India (2,083), Russia (1,176), Japan (1,030), Brazil (762), Canada (646), South Korea (625), Germany (520), France (477).

However, the ranking by per capita electricity consumption is vastly different. Canada ranks first with 16.1 megawatt-hours (MWh) per person, primarily due to large residential areas, cold climate, and high-energy-consuming lifestyles. The United States follows closely with 13.1 MWh per capita, while South Korea ranks third at 12.1 MWh. China’s per capita electricity consumption stands at 7.5 MWh, placing it sixth. Although India ranks third globally in total electricity consumption, its per capita usage is only 1.4 MWh, the lowest among these countries and significantly below the global average of 3.9 MWh.

As nations accelerate the electrification of transportation, manufacturing, heating, and AI infrastructure, global electricity demand is expected to grow substantially over the coming decades.
