Media in the US: A Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) instructor at Old Dominion University was shot and killed

The New York Times website reported on March 12: The instructor who was shot and killed by Mohammed Bilal Jallo, a supporter of the Islamic State (ISIS), was a decorated professor in the Department of Military Science at Old Dominion University, who had served multiple times in the Middle East.

The report said that on Thursday morning, Lt. Col. Brandon Shah (Fig. 2) was teaching a class at the university when he was shot dead by 36-year-old Jallo, who stormed into the classroom.

The report stated that according to the university's personal introduction of Shah, since his enlistment in 2003, he had served multiple times with the U.S. Army, including deployments supporting "Operation Iraqi Freedom," "Operation Enduring Freedom," and later participating in "Operation Atlantic Resolve" (a U.S.-led NATO operation in Ukraine in 2014 to strengthen readiness—note from the translator).

The report said that according to the U.S. Department of Justice, this veteran had also served in the Virginia National Guard. However, Jallo, the perpetrator (Fig. 3), had previously been part of the same state's National Guard before becoming an adherent of the ISIS ideology. Nevertheless, there is no information about Shah in the Virginia National Guard, but they confirmed to the New York Post that Jallo was honorably discharged just one day short of completing his six-year service in April 2015.

The report said that according to Shah's resume, he is a proud alumnus of Old Dominion University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Kansas, having received 17 awards related to his legendary military career, including the Air Force Cross and three Army commendation medals. According to the university's description of him, he also set a record of flying three different aircraft for more than 1,200 hours based on 600 combat flight hours.

The report said that the governor of Virginia, Abigail Spanberger, paid tribute to Shah in a statement posted on X platform.

Spanberger wrote, "As a loyal ROTC instructor, Colonel Shah not only served our country, but he also taught and led others down this path," "I thank him for his example, am deeply saddened by his death, and offer my prayers to his family."

The report said that two other ROTC members were injured in the shooting incident, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which has been characterized as a "terrorist act."

The original title of the report was "Old Dominion ROTC instructor killed by convicted ISIS terrorist ID’d as chair of military science department who served in the Middle East" (An Old Dominion University ROTC instructor, who had served in the Middle East and was the head of the military science department, was killed by an ISIS terrorist).
