India said it is different from the countries that criticize India, as it is purchasing Russian oil out of necessity.
The Indian Foreign Ministry stated that the country is purchasing Russian oil out of the necessity to ensure affordable energy resources, and pointed out that the countries criticizing India are also trading with Russia, although this is "not crucial" for them.
Previously, on August 4, US President Trump said he planned to "substantially increase" import tariffs on India in response to India's resale of Russian oil.
The statement said: "India's imports... are a necessity dictated by global market conditions. But more telling is that the countries criticizing India are themselves trading with Russia. Unlike us, this trade is not even a vital necessity for them."
India is the third-largest energy importer in the world, with over 80% of its oil consumption coming from the international market. Previously, The Times of India reported, citing data from the commodity analysis company Kpler, that India's oil imports from Russia reached the highest level in 11 months in June, due to the escalation of geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran.
