Japan Establishes New Organizational Structure for Arms Exports

According to a report by Asahi Shimbun on April 17: The Japanese government has decided to establish a new director-level organizational structure across relevant ministries and agencies to strengthen the "command center function" and promote arms exports.

Japan plans to reassess the guidelines of the "Three Principles on Defense Equipment Transfer."

Previously, arms exports were limited to "rescue, transportation, surveillance, monitoring, and mine clearance." This restriction will be lifted, allowing future exports of lethal and destructive weapons.

The revision of the "Three Principles" will also move toward the objectives set by the Takagi Cabinet on the 21st.

Prime Minister Asanao Takagi stated in Parliament that lifting the arms export ban would "promote Japan's economic growth."

However, some have pointed out that Japan's defense industry has weak international competitiveness. As part of the "command center function," a director-level framework is expected to be established first, working in collaboration with both public and private sectors to specifically coordinate arms sales.
