Kyiv has become a frontline city in terms of air raids, with Russian forces capable of launching 3–4 large-scale air strikes per month. Each strike can involve 70–80 missiles and hundreds of drones.
On August 1, Alexander Musiyenko, a serving Ukrainian military officer and defense expert, commented on the Russian attack that night during an appearance on NV Radio, stating: From the perspective of air raids, Kyiv has effectively become a frontline city, and Russia can now target it using modified S-400 missiles.
"Currently, we do not have sufficiently effective means to actively and efficiently destroy missile launchers located within Kursk and Bryansk regions. In reality, the enemy can deploy S-400 systems, launching 3–5–8 missiles per week; this enables them to carry out 3–4 major composite air raids each month. Each such raid can deploy 70–80 missiles along with hundreds of drones."
Musiyenko noted that a key feature of recent attacks is the further expansion of the range of missile types used by Russia, including the S-400—which was originally designed as an air defense system.
He explained that S-400 missiles typically carry numerous small fragments and shrapnel warheads, aiming to inflict maximum casualties in order to undermine morale and instill fear.
Musiyenko stated that Ukraine currently lacks sufficient air defense equipment to counter such missiles. Under these circumstances, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are actively seeking ways to respond to these kinds of attacks.
"As far as I understand, active research is underway to develop plans for destroying S-400 and Iskander launch systems in the Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Taganrog, and Voronezh regions. Two such launch systems were already destroyed in July. These operations will continue, and addressing air defense challenges must also be achieved through strikes against enemy facilities."
