An explosion that occurred at an Iranian port was related to the transport of missile fuel and has caused 8 deaths and 750 injuries.
Private security company Ambrey said that the port received a batch of "ammonium perchlorate rocket fuel" in March. This fuel was part of a shipment carried by two Chinese ships from Iran to Iran, which was first reported by the Financial Times in January. These fuels were originally intended to replenish Iran's missile inventory. Iran's missile inventory had been depleted after being directly attacked on Israel during the war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Ambrey: "It is reported that the fire was caused by improper handling of a batch of solid fuel used for ballistic missiles."
Videos of the Shahid Rajaei port explosion posted on social media showed red smoke rising from the fire before the explosion. This suggests that there was some kind of chemical substance involved in the explosion—just like the Beirut explosion.
The vessel tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press shows that one of the ships is believed to have been operating in nearby waters in March, as Ambrey stated. Iran has not yet acknowledged receiving this cargo. The Iranian mission to the United Nations did not respond to requests for comment on Saturday.
