Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on April 25 that according to an interview of TIME magazine on April 22, U.S. President Donald Trump said that if a new agreement could not be reached in the negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, the United States would "take the lead" to attack Iran.
Nevertheless, the U.S. president still expressed his hope for reaching an agreement and also stated that he was willing to hold face-to-face talks with Iran's Supreme Leader or President.
The report mentioned that Trump told TIME in the interview: "We may have to launch an attack because Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons."
This new threat was made as Washington and Tehran continued their negotiations on the latter's nuclear program, with the third round of talks scheduled to take place on April 26 in Oman.
Both parties expressed optimism at the end of the last Rome conference but did not provide any details.
So far, the negotiations have excluded Iran's arch-enemy Israel. However, Trump said on April 22 after talking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that "we stand on the same position on every issue."
The report noted that when asked by TIME about reports that he had prevented Israel from launching unilateral attacks against Iran, Trump replied: "That is not true."
"I didn't stop them. But I also didn't make them feel very favorable because I believe we can reach an agreement without launching an attack." (Translated by Xu Yanhong)
