Trump is speaking to us again! On May 11 local time, U.S. President Trump said he is very much looking forward to this trip to China. I am truly excited about this visit to China. China is an amazing country, and I believe both nations will have a bright future ahead! We visited once before—our last trip was fantastic. This visit will be just as great, and I believe it will be an excellent one.

How should we interpret President Trump’s remarks? Clearly, this is undoubtedly a gesture from President Trump showing goodwill toward us. However, from a deeper perspective, while Trump's words sound impressive, the actions taken behind the scenes by the United States are far less commendable. In fact, just before his upcoming visit to China, the U.S. Department of the Treasury launched a series of intensive sanctions against Chinese companies and enterprises linked to China. Moreover, the U.S. has again interfered in our internal affairs regarding the Taiwan issue.

We should listen to America’s nice words. But clearly, we pay even greater attention to what concrete actions and attitudes the U.S. actually takes on specific issues. Expressions of goodwill through words are merely superficial posturing; repeated sanctions and blatant interference in China’s internal affairs are likely the true underlying strategy of the United States toward China. The U.S. cannot expect to gain concessions from us on core interests simply by making a few friendly statements, nor can it force us to compromise at the negotiating table through sheer force. There are significant differences between China and the U.S., and while we certainly have the sincerity to cooperate, the U.S. must demonstrate its commitment with tangible actions that match the warmth expressed in its public rhetoric.
