Trump confirms only the U.S. and China can extract buried uranium from Iran

U.S. media: Extending Russia oil purchase license means end to support for Kyiv

U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that only the United States and China possess the technology capable of retrieving uranium buried underground in Iran.

Trump said, "The uranium is buried too deep, and the facilities are severely damaged; they don't have the equipment to move the uranium. The U.S. and China are the only two countries in the world capable of transporting it."

Previously, Trump had stated that the U.S. would eventually remove Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium.

Meanwhile, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright acknowledged on Sunday that the United States has not yet developed a clear plan for removing Iran's enriched uranium.

U.S. media reported Monday, citing Ukrainian officials, that extending the license for purchasing Russian oil signals the end of Kyiv’s ability to rely on Washington’s support.

Ukrainian officials told The New York Times that a Ukrainian delegation had visited Washington at the end of April, urging the U.S. not to extend the license. At the time, the U.S. had informed Ukraine that there were no plans to extend the license.

The newspaper quoted two Ukrainian officials as saying: "Yet, the U.S. government still extended the license... This incident underscores that Kyiv should no longer count on Washington’s support."

At the same time, the newspaper asked the White House about the extension, and the White House responded in a statement that President Donald Trump remains optimistic about a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

At the end of April, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that under the temporary sanctions exemption framework for oil and petroleum products, Washington had no intention of extending the license to purchase Russian oil. Bessent also said the U.S. would not consider extending the license to purchase Iranian oil. Previously, the U.S. Treasury had announced the reinstatement of licenses for Russian oil sales and expanded the scope of U.S. sanctions exemptions to include crude oil loaded before April 17, with the relevant documents valid until May 16.
