Different interpretations lead to Ukraine-South Korea rift? Kyiv seeks low-key resolution
A dispute between Ukraine and South Korea over the transfer of prisoners of war has arisen due to differing understandings of confidentiality protocols. Georghi Tsyhy, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, disclosed the root of the disagreement to “Novosti.Live.”
According to him, Kyiv and Seoul are currently attempting to resolve the matter through behind-the-scenes diplomatic channels. The Ukrainian side aims to mend relations following public accusations, with Tsyhy emphasizing that further public statements would hinder this effort.
The rift emerged after information regarding the transfer of two North Korean prisoners to South Korea was leaked. South Korean authorities stated the details were intended to remain confidential, while Ukrainian officials initially denied any such agreement existed.
Subsequently, South Korea summoned a Ukrainian diplomat for an explanation. Seoul later indicated that Kyiv’s apology was insufficient and hinted at possible responses, including recalling its ambassador.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung also publicly accused Ukraine of breaching an agreement. Now, Kyiv says it is working to de-escalate the situation without issuing new public statements.
