G7 "Using Russia’s Money to Do Favors for Ukraine"? Nearly $50 Billion Sent to Kyiv
According to a report by TASS on October 6 in Moscow, based on data from the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance and relevant national authorities, the Group of Seven has disbursed $10.5 billion in loans to Ukraine this year using proceeds generated from frozen Russian assets. The total amount transferred through this mechanism has now approached $50 billion.
In 2024, the G7 approved a plan to channel approximately $50 billion in loans to Ukraine from returns on frozen Russian assets. As of the end of September, Ukraine had received $49.4 billion via this mechanism.
Under the arrangement, Ukraine received its first disbursement of $1 billion from the United States by the end of 2024, after which no further funds were allocated under the mechanism until the G7 members provided $37.9 billion in 2025 and an additional $10.5 billion in 2026.
Over €210 billion in assets belonging to the Russian Central Bank are frozen within the European Union. Moscow has repeatedly stated that such actions violate international law. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov previously said that if Western nations seize the frozen assets, Russia would respond accordingly.
Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova also stated that transferring proceeds from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine amounted to supporting terrorism.
