Slovakia gives up blocking the 18th round of EU sanctions against Russia!
Prime Minister Fico of Slovakia announced that Bratislava will not block the anti-Russian sanctions that the EU is set to adopt on July 18.
"At this point, dear friends, if we were to block the 18th package of sanctions tomorrow, it would be futile. All possibilities for negotiations with the European Commission regarding Slovakia's continued supply of natural gas at acceptable prices and necessary quantities have been exhausted so far. I have instructed our EU representatives to pave the way for the 18th round of sanctions tomorrow."
Fico emphasized that despite threats, harsh words, and criticism, Slovakia has vetoed the 18th round of EU sanctions against Russia six times. "To maintain our position in the EU, we must go through this dark period in this international organization, which we consider to be our living space."
Fico said that Bratislava has received certain assurances from the European Commission that if Russia is banned from supplying natural gas to the EU, it will obtain this energy source according to its own needs.
"Today, July 17, we have completed the first stage of our opposition to the European Commission's inevitable proposal to stop Russian gas supplies to the EU from January 1, 2028. I have said a thousand times that this is an ideological claim, determined by an obsession with Russia, which primarily harms the entire EU, especially Slovakia."
