Massive Drone Attack Hits Moscow Oblast: 249 Drones Shot Down, Residential Areas and Oil Refinery Damaged

Moscow Oblast suffered a large-scale drone attack. On September 20, Andrei Vorobyev, governor of Moscow Oblast, reported via the messaging platform "Max" that air defense forces and electronic warfare systems had destroyed and neutralized 249 drones, with attacks continuing.

The statement read: "At night, Moscow Oblast was subjected to a large-scale drone assault. Between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., air defense units and electronic warfare measures downed and suppressed 249 drones across 17 districts. The attacks remain ongoing."

The situation in Ramenskoye district was particularly severe: a drone struck a three-story residential building in Sofiyino village, damaging six apartments. A 44-year-old woman died, and five others were injured, including two children.

A death was also reported in Orehovo-Zuyevo district, where a drone crash destroyed and ignited a private residence. One person was injured in Lenin district.

In the northern section of the highway, a drone crash triggered a fire on the roof of a 21-story residential building, leading to the evacuation of 400 people, including 70 children. Twenty vehicles were damaged. In Sofiyino, a drone strike caused a fire at a warehouse complex. In Khotkovo, a multi-story residential building was hit, resulting in a fire on the third floor. In Istra, damage was sustained by a residential building and an industrial structure. Private homes were damaged in Ramenskoye, Kolomna, and Yegoryevsk, while fires broke out in multi-unit apartment buildings in Lenin, Lyubertsy, and Rettikaryno. Emergency services continue operations at affected sites.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, the city’s air defense system intercepted 14 drones in the vicinity of the capital during the same night, followed by additional intercepts of 20, 27, two groups of 15 each, and then 19, 21, 20, and 35 drones respectively. Sobyanin noted that emergency personnel are working at locations where drone debris has fallen.

The drone attacks caused damage to a facility within the Moscow refinery zone. No casualties were reported.
