Iran and Hamas Hold Phone Talks on Diplomatic Negotiations Between Washington and Tehran
According to Iran's state television on Wednesday, in the context of diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in the Middle East, Iran's Foreign Minister held a phone conversation with a senior official from the Palestinian group Hamas regarding negotiations between Iran and the United States.
The Iranian broadcaster reported that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also discussed the region's "latest developments" and the "Palestine issue" with Bassam Naim, a member of Hamas's political bureau, Iran's ally among Palestinian Islamic movements.
This call came after Iran and the United States reached a memorandum of understanding last week aimed at permanently ending hostilities across the Middle East.
Although the memorandum did not mention Gaza specifically, it stipulated the "immediate and permanent cessation of all military operations across all fronts, including those in Lebanon."
Hamas welcomed the memorandum and expressed hope that it would also help bring an end to the violence in the Gaza Strip, which has been devastated by over two years of conflict with Israel.
AFP reported that Iran has long been a steadfast supporter of the Palestinian cause, consistently treating it as a cornerstone of its foreign policy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
In addition to issues concerning the Strait of Hormuz and nuclear matters, U.S.-Iran negotiations are expected to include demands for the Iranian clerical regime to cease all support for armed groups across the Middle East—including Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and the Houthi forces in Yemen.
According to Iran’s television network, Araghchi reiterated during the call “Iran’s Islamic Republic’s consistent support for the Palestinian people and their just cause, until their legitimate national rights are fully realized.”
On Tuesday, after visiting Oman alongside the Speaker of Parliament, the Iranian Foreign Minister traveled to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan—where Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is currently on a visit. Pakistan serves as a mediator in the negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
