Baltic States May Close Ports to Russian Grain
According to Reuters, Latvia and Lithuania are examining a comprehensive plan to ban Russian grain from transiting through their ports. The Latvian government will hold a special meeting on this issue Tuesday.
The policy shift comes amid a sharp increase in freight traffic following Ukraine's attacks on Black Sea shipping routes. Russia has begun massively rerouting its grain exports to Baltic ports, with this season's export volume expected to surge from 1 million to 5–6 million tons.
Latvia and Lithuania believe some of the cargo may be illegally shipped Ukrainian grain from Russian-controlled areas. Lithuania has already sent grain samples to France for verification of origin, while Latvia is developing control mechanisms to intercept this shipment.
