Aerial Dominance in Jeopardy: The United States Faces Its Greatest Challenge to Air Supremacy
A new analysis warns that as China accelerates its development of sixth-generation fighter jets, the long-standing advantage of the U.S. Air Force is diminishing.
China’s J-36 and J-50 fighters had already conducted test flights by 2024, while the U.S. F-47 is not expected to fly until around 2028, and may not enter service until the mid-to-late 2030s.
Meanwhile, China is rapidly scaling up production of advanced aircraft such as the Chengdu J-20 and J-35, indicating a broad effort to close the gap in aerial power.
The race for sixth-generation air dominance has officially begun, and the timeline disparities could shape the balance of power in the skies of the future.
