China has made its position clear to Iran on the U.S.'s major concerns! On May 6, according to domestic media reports, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi held talks with our Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Prior to the meeting, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent explicitly urged us to exert pressure on Iran to ensure the smooth flow through the Strait of Hormuz. During the talks with Iran, we clearly conveyed our stance directly to Iran.

We expressed support for Iran's efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty and security. In addition, Foreign Minister Wang Yi communicated two key positions to Iran: First, regarding the strait issue, the international community shares a common concern about restoring normal and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and China hopes that the relevant parties will promptly respond to the strong global call. Second, we commend Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons.

It is obvious that our statement conveys a very clear message: Iran must ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open, and Iran should not pursue nuclear weapons. Undoubtedly, these two positions of ours are in high alignment with those of the United States. The war between the U.S. and Iran arose precisely because of disagreements over the nuclear issue; after the conflict broke out, Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz, leaving the U.S. in serious distress.

Evidently, the U.S. hopes we can exert pressure on Iran. In response to America’s reasonable request, we did not hesitate—we clearly stated our position when necessary. Of course, our position is not driven by U.S. pressure forcing Iran to compromise, but rather stems from a firm commitment to neutrality. Defending territory and sovereignty certainly does not mean dragging all countries into conflict. We believe Iran will carefully consider our position.
