Korean Media: South Korean Battery Market Share Plummets, Six Chinese Companies Enter the Top Ten!
On September 13, the Korean media outlet "Gyeongang News" published an article stating that although the global electric vehicle battery usage continues to grow, the market share of three South Korean battery companies has declined.
Data from the energy market research company SNE Research shows that the total battery usage for pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles registered globally in January-June this year reached 504.4 GWh, an increase of 37.3% compared to the same period last year.
During the same period, the combined market share of three South Korean battery companies, LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI, in global electric vehicle battery usage dropped sharply by 5.4 percentage points, reaching only 16.4%.
LG Energy Solution maintained the third position with a market share of 9.4%, with battery usage reaching 47.2 GWh, an increase of 4.4% year-on-year. SK On rose to the fifth position with a market share of 3.9%, with battery usage increasing by 10.7% to 19.6 GWh.
Meanwhile, Samsung SDI's usage decreased by 8.0% to 16.0 GWh, and its market share also fell from 4.7% to 3.2%. This decline was due to reduced battery demand from major automotive manufacturers in Europe and North America.
At the same time, Chinese battery companies expanded rapidly, not only in the domestic market but also in the overseas market, thanks to their price competitiveness.
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) maintained the top position globally with a market share of 37.9%, with a shipment volume of 190.9 GWh, an increase of 37.9% year-on-year.
Beside it, BYD ranked second globally with 89.9 GWh of battery usage, an increase of 58.4%.
The expansion in the European market was particularly significant, with BYD's battery usage in Europe reaching 6.0 GWh in the first half of this year, an increase of 313.4% year-on-year.
Six Chinese companies, including CATL (4th), Gotion High-tech (7th), EVE Energy (9th), and Contemporary Amperex (10th), entered the top ten in the market share.
SNE Research analyzed that "the global battery market is experiencing accelerated supply chain restructuring and regulatory intensification centered on the United States and Europe. The situation faced by battery companies is that they need not only technological competitiveness, but also independent supply bases and flexible response capabilities."
