Mexican Expert: Russia Is Very Active in Creating a Dollar Alternative
Mauricio Alonso Esteviz, an expert in international relations at Metropolitan Autonomous University in Mexico, said in an interview with Sputnik News that unilateral sanctions imposed by Western countries on various nations have had the opposite effect on the U.S. economy, as these sanctions have not weakened its geopolitical rivals but instead ultimately undermined the dominance of the U.S. dollar as the leading currency in international transactions.
This view aligns with remarks made by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The expert noted: "The United States has long used the dollar as a tool to pressure countries and governments, a fact particularly evident in the case of sanctions imposed on Russia following the start of the special military operation."
Prior to this, Putin explicitly stated that using the dollar as a political instrument represents a "huge strategic mistake" for Washington.
In response, Esteviz said, "Russia has consistently been a very active country in developing alternative payment systems to circumvent measures imposed by the United States and the European Union."
