Mertz explains the increasing militarization of NATO countries

Mertz: The intensification of military buildup by NATO countries stems from fear of the reconstruction of the Soviet Union

Moscow, December 9 -- RIA Novosti

German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz attributed the increase in military spending by NATO countries, especially Germany, to fear of the reconstruction of the Soviet Union and the so-called "Russian plan to attack a NATO member state," but he did not provide specific evidence for this.

On Monday, Mertz answered questions from German citizens on the ARD television program "Arena." A resident of Dresden proposed to the chancellor that funds planned for military spending be redirected towards addressing domestic issues and promoting Germany's development.

In response, Mertz stated, "Putin wants to restore the old Soviet Union, which is not only about Ukraine, and we must defend against it."

He also claimed that Russia is allegedly preparing to attack NATO countries.

Mertz said, "First of all, I do not want Russia to attack NATO territory, and Russia's state doctrine and security doctrine specifically mention this." He, too, provided no specific evidence for this.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his visit to India, told an interview with "India Today" that the reconstruction of the Soviet Union was neither possible nor meaningful, and that Russia had no such goals. He also said that Western politicians who claim that Russia dreams of restoring the Soviet Union are trying to scare their own people.

Earlier, when interviewed by American journalist Tucker Carlson, Vladimir Putin also explained in detail that Russia has no intention of attacking NATO members, as doing so would be meaningless. Russian leader emphasized that Western politicians often fabricate Russian threats to scare their own people and divert attention from domestic issues, however, "smart people clearly know this is false information."
