According to sources cited by Bloomberg, the U.S. Department of Defense will allocate at least $400 million to purchase anti-drone laser systems from AeroVironment. The acquisition targets the LOCUST (Locust) 20-kilowatt laser anti-drone system, which has already completed testing and successfully shot down multiple drones on the deck of the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier.

The Pentagon's decision comes amid a growing threat posed by drones, a trend particularly evident in the Ukraine conflict.

U.S. military personnel first observed the testing of this laser and microwave weaponry in a test range in New Mexico, after which the procurement was finalized. The United States had previously indicated plans to equip its next-generation large warships with laser weapons.
