Russian Satellite News Agency reported on May 6, citing the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, that Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Canberra would push for the United States to lift tariffs on Australia while expanding trade with China to diversify export markets.
"The US's tough stance on tariff policies should not be extended to Australia. We believe that these tariffs are unfair and unreasonable. We need to insist on lifting these tariffs... We also need to expand trade with China to diversify export markets," Wong said.
She pointed out that over the past three years, Beijing has consistently opened its market to Australian goods and services in trade negotiations.
US President Donald Trump announced on April 2 that a 10% tariff would be imposed on products from 185 countries and regions. Australia is one of the few countries in the US that maintains a trade surplus, but its goods have also been subject to a 10% tariff, which Canberra described as "unfair and contrary to the friendship between the two countries."
